The controversial M4 bus lane is going to be scrapped at the end of 2010.

All motorists will once more be in a position to use the 3.5-mile (five.6km) bus lane, which operates on the London-bound carriageway near London's Heathrow Airport.

Transport Secretary Philip Hammond confirmed the proposed action saying that the bus lane was "not effective". It will probably be suspended from 24 December for 18 months when it comes back into use for the Olympics, right after which it will probably be scrapped permanently

The motorway's third lane which is between between junctions three and two  and which carries about 7% of visitors to London is reserved currently for buses, licensed black taxis and motorcycles.

Mr Hammond told BBC Radio 5 Live that it was a was "a piece of folly" and a symbol of the Labour Party's ''war on the motorist''.

The bus lane was introduced by then Transport Secretary John Prescott in 1999. It was catagorised as the "Blair Lane" after the former prime minister utilized it to steer clear of heavy traffic.

Apart from black cabs the lane was barely  used, with buses rarel;y seen.

The bus lane was also rarely enforced. The most up-to-date statistics showed no more than 14 £60  penalty notices being handed out to drivers in 2008.
Whilst the RAC welcomed the projected closure a spokesperson of one of the taxi cab organisations who said that 1000's of cab journeys are made from Heathrow each day and the huge majority of {those|passenger arrive into London.

He said that it means taxis won't be able to make use of that lane and it will cause a fantastic inconvenience to taxi drivers and also to their customers who, if they get caught in traffic jams, will end up having to pay more money.
